In Memory of Professor Claudio Falcone

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Claudio Falcone, our former colleague and a dear friend to many of us.


Claudio devoted his life to scientific research and to the education of generations of scholars, leaving a profound mark on the fields of yeast molecular biology and biotechnology. He began his career as a researcher in Giorgio Tecce's laboratory before joining Laura Frontali, with whom he helped establish fermentation chemistry and the molecular biology of yeasts in Italy.


His early studies on yeast mitochondrial DNA and cellular energy metabolism made significant contributions to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying respiration and mitochondrial function in eukaryotes. Later, together with his research group, he was among the pioneers in developing Kluyveromyces lactis as a model organism and biotechnological platform, laying the foundations for the first expression vectors in this yeast. Through the isolation of regulated promoters and the European project Yeast as a Cell Factory, he opened the way for the use of K. lactis as a host for the production of heterologous proteins, making a decisive contribution to the adoption of yeast-based industrial biotechnology.


Equally important was his contribution to academic education. He was among the founders of the University Diploma Program in Biotechnology, one of the first academic programs in Italy dedicated to this emerging field. Following the reform of the Italian university system, the program evolved into the Degree Program in Agro-Industrial Biotechnology, helping educate many graduates who now work in research and in the food, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries.

Beyond his achievements as a scientist and educator, we remember Claudio above all as a remarkable person. He was always proactive and enterprising, approaching every challenge with enthusiasm, intelligence, and expertise. His wit, his sense of humor, his ability to laugh at himself, and his warm smile brightened everyday work and left an enduring memory in all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.


We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.


His scientific achievements, his humanity, and his vision will continue to live on through the work, the ideas, and the memories of all those whose lives he touched.
